Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
Sodium Hydroxide (INCI)

Soap is the result of a chemical reaction called saponification that occurs when lye and a fatty substance are combined. These substances are chemically transformed, creating soap and glycerin. All the lye is consumed in the reaction and none is left in the final product. Sodium Hydroxide produces a solid bar of soap. Potassium Hydroxide produces a liquid or paste soap.
